The area of Matagorda is simply an extension of the larger resort of Puerto del Carmen, part of the municipality of Tias, along the southern coast of the island. This resort stands out of the crowd thanks to its perfect location and also the tranquility it has to offer.
Being only a few minutes drive (or a 3 kilometre walk) to Playa de los Poncillos and Puerto del Carmen and a short distance from Lanzarote’s capital Arrecife, Matagorda is the perfect place for a family vacation. Free from the commotion and agitation of Puerto del Carmen but also close enough should you fancy a night out, Matagorda is also the closest resort to Arrecife Airport, being only an approximate 10 minutes bus transfer or a 5 minutes cab drive away.
Built in recent years due to the high demand in Puerto del Carmen, this beautiful resort offers a wide range of accommodation, from 4 star hotels such as Beatriz Playa or Los Jameos Playa to self catering villas and apartments like Club Don Paco Castilla, all located just a few minutes walk from the beach.
What can you get up to in Matagorda
If you’re into extreme sports or just want to try something new during your time here, then we are happy to let you know that Matagorda is one of the three resorts in Lanzarote where windsurfing is practiced, along with Jameos del Agua(North East Lanzarote) and Las Cucharas (Costa Teguise). It is truly a windsurfer’s haven, with winds usually gusting from a north-easterly direction, creating the perfect scenery for windsurfers of all experience levels. The winter months bring stronger, more unpredictable winds, more suitable for confident, experienced windsurfers.
Another fun activity to do while in Matagorda is diving. Whether you prefer snorkeling or scuba-diving, The Dive Shop is only a five minutes walk from Beatriz Playa Hotel and you’ll find friendly, English speaking staff there prepared for beginners and experienced divers altogether. Explore the underwater world of Lanzarote and get recordings of the marine life as well as professional photos of your experience.
If you’re planning a fun day out for children, the Rancho Texas Theme Park is just a short drive from Matagorda. Children will be able to interact with sea-lions, observe birds of prey such as falcons, vultures, eagles and even a condor flying nearby, observe exotic reptiles, go on pony-rides or take part in fun pool games and activities. You can go canoeing as well or enjoy the American-style restaurants. They also have themed nights, such as the Wonderful Wild West, where you’ll enjoy the cabaret show, the friendly welcome from cowboys and saloon girls, dance to Country music or test your skills on the Rodeo Bull.
Other leisure activities in the area include equitation, tennis, golf and squash. Other available aqua sports are banana boat rides, jet-skiing, parasailing and deep sea fishing. There are numerous trips on offer such as boat trips or visits to the Timanfaya National Park.
Where to eat and drink
You will find most bars and restaurants within or in the surrounding area of Matagorda Shopping Centre. There is a wide choice of cuisines, from traditional to Greek, British, Japanese, Chinese, Italian and your usual Pizzerias and grill houses. An added bonus is that unlike Matagorda’s neighbour Puerto del Carmen, there aren’t any reps outside restaurants who try to attract you into their establishments. One of the best ranked restaurants in Matagorda according to holidaymakers is El Cuate, offering Mexican-style cuisine. People who dined here say they would often run out of food - that’s how good it is! So if you’re planning to give it a try, make sure you choose a reasonable hour.
If you want a more lively feasting scene, then we recommend you take a walk down the marvelous promenade linking the two resorts, or simply take a taxi to Puerto del Carmen, as a round trip won’t cost you more than 8€.
Beaches of Matagorda
If you’re opting for a holiday in Matagorda, then sunbathing is definitely the main activity surrounding your vacation. Full of wide, seamlessly never-ending beaches filled with fine golden sand, Matagorda is a sun-lover’s paradise.
Matagora’s beach has received the European Blue Flag for cleanliness, calm waters and great amenities, including sunbeds, parasols, bars, restaurants, toilets and showers.
Fun-fact: there is a naturist beach only 3 kilometres away, called Playa de Guacimeta, so if you’re a nudist, then that’s the place for you! It’s also a designated beach for exercising dogs, in case you’re planning to take your furry friend with you on holiday.
